A sourcing tool will return thousands of profiles listing Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, but there is no guarantee that these developers have created apps that work on real devices.

There’s a real distinction in abilities that only shows up once someone’s actually been on call for a crash spike after a release.

Google made it the preferred language back in 2019. Since it is the standard, the official docs and Jetpack libraries are Kotlin-first, and Compose requires it outright.

A candidate with Java experience in 2026 needs to explain how that applies today, since they will almost certainly be working in a Kotlin codebase now.

Jetpack Compose is the standard UI app development toolkit.

It hit stable 1.0 in 2021, and Google has long since stopped adding meaningful new UI features to the older View system entirely.

New platform APIs, window insets handling, predictive back, edge-to-edge display, all ship Compose-first now. Material 3 with dynamic color is the default visual language for new apps.

  • Kotlin Multiplatform engineer: expect/actual patterns, Ktor, SQLDelight, and genuinely shared logic across platforms.

Two Claims Worth Probing on an Android Resume

We have consistently noticed two claims that result in misunderstandings. If you see either of these two on a resume, make sure that you follow up.

1. Kotlin Multiplatform experience.

Production KMP is still uncommon enough that anyone claiming it should be able to walk through their actual expect/actual decisions, what they did about iOS-specific platform code, and whether they used Ktor directly or wrapped a native iOS networking layer instead.

The more specific the answer you can get, the more likely it is that the experience is genuine, not just a tutorial.

2. Modernized a legacy app to Jetpack Compose.

This often means one new feature built in Compose sitting beside a much larger, untouched View-system codebase.

It’s worth asking directly what percentage of the app is actually Compose today, who set the migration strategy, and how theme parity was handled between View and Compose screens during the transition period.

Android Development in Fintech

A mobile banking or payments app carries platform-specific obligations a general consumer app simply doesn’t:

  • Secure credential and token storage through the Android Keystore specifically.
  • Biometric authentication with correct fallback behavior when biometrics aren’t available or fail.
  • Certificate pinning for API communication, so a compromised network can’t quietly intercept traffic.
  • Root and tamper detection, along with a real plan for how to respond without locking out legitimate users who’ve simply customized their own device.
  • Screenshot and screen-recording prevention on account and card screens specifically.
  • Keeping card data out of the app entirely wherever possible.

Native Android or React Native?

There is no single right answer.

Native Android is the right call when a product needs deep platform integration, the best possible performance on lower-end devices, or platform-specific security features like the ones above.

React Native is often the better economic choice when the same product is shipping to iOS and Android with a small team, and the UI itself isn’t performance-critical.
